The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)
The National Art Gallery of Victoria, or NGV, is Australia's largest and oldest art museum. Established in 1861 and originally located in the State Library of Victoria, the NGV is now split between two distinct sites.
The main, largest and most impressive site is located in Southbank on Saint Kilda Road, and is home to the impressive collection of International art pieces. The NGV International building boasts spectacular features such as a giant water-wall at the front, a monumental stained glass ceiling at the rear, as well as a sculpture garden behind the building. The permanent collection of the NGV spans centuries and includes works from masters such as Rembrandt, Monet, Poussin and van Dyck, to name a few. Yearly temporary exhibitions titled Melbourne Winter Masterpieces were introduced in 2004 and draw crowds of thousands from all around the country, coming to the NGV to take the opportunity to admire works never shown in Australia before.
The Ian Potter Centre was opened in 2002 on the nearby Federation Square, and houses the NGV's Australian Collection, including an important indigenous art collection, along with art works from the colonial era, the 20th century as well as contemporary art.
Centrally located in South Bank, the National Gallery of Victoria is only a short 10 minutes walk across the Yarra River from the Melbourne CBD, and is serviced by eight tram lines (part of the Melbourne free tram zone). Alternatively, ample car parking is available under the NGV.
