Hobart Convict Penitentiary
Constructed in 1830 to 1833 in response to the overcrowding of convicts in Hobart, the Hobart Convict Penitentiary was designed in the shape of a cross. The gaol also included a stunning chapel which housed solitary confinement cells underneath its floor. The Trinity Church chapel was constructed for the use of both prisoners and free citizens. In 1859 the chapel was converted into court rooms and continued to be in use until 1983. Whilst the courtrooms were in construction, the execution yard and gallows were also built onsite. Over 50,000 prisoners were housed in Hobart’s penitentiary which ran for more than 100 years.
Take a Hobart Convict Penitentiary guided tour and gallows walk to experience the dark prison life and history of Australian gaol system. With its central city location, you are in easy reach of other great Hobart attractions such as the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Salamanca Markets and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). Head to the University Rose Gardens after your visit at the Hobart Convict Penitentiary, just a 5-minute walk away to take in the beautifully manicured gardens and sensational smelling roses.
Exploring the city on the Red Decker Bus provides the easiest access to the gaol and many other city landmarks. Hop off at the ‘Old Hobart Gaol’ stop to find the Hobart Convict Penitentiary. You can reach much of Hobart city centre by foot or Hobart’s bus metro lines.
