Hobart Convict Penitentiary
Constructed in 1830 to 1833 in response to the overcrowding of convicts in Hobart, the Hobart Convict Penitentiary was designed in the shape of a cross. The gaol also included a stunning chapel which housed solitary confinement cells underneath its floor. The Trinity Church chapel was constructed for the use of both prisoners and free citizens. In 1859 the chapel was converted into court rooms and continued to be in use until 1983. Whilst the courtrooms were in construction, the execution yard and gallows were also built onsite. Over 50,000 prisoners were housed in Hobart’s penitentiary which ran for more than 100 years.
