What to pack

For this NSW coastal road trip from Wollongong through Cronulla to Newcastle, pack for beach days, outdoor adventures and a mix of laid-back and buzzing city dining.
What to pack
Pack beach essentials – swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest – plus comfortable walking shoes for Wollongong's national park trails and Newcastle's coastal walk. Smart-casual works for the restaurant scenes in all three stops. Bring a camera for the Sea Cliff Bridge views and Newcastle's ocean baths, and if the Wollongong SkyDiving experience is on the list, comfortable clothes and a sense of adventure are all you need.

Explore Wollongong

Sitting just a few blocks from the beach, Quest Wollongong has some of the city's best offerings within easy reach, from cafes and restaurants to galleries and open water. If you're keen for some morning exercise, set out for a walk towards the only point on Australia's east coast with two lighthouses – Wollongong Harbour, around 20 minutes away. The Wollongong Art Gallery, only two blocks from Quest, is free to enter and home to an extensive collection including contemporary and First Nations works.

Explore Cronulla

A stone's throw from the beach and an equally short distance to restaurants and cafes, Quest Cronulla Beach is accessible-accredited, pet-friendly and has an outdoor pool and sauna. Set yourself up then head out to discover this beachside suburb: coastal walks to Cape Baily, a ferry across to Bundeena in the Royal National Park, and the famous rock pools. Start your day with coffee and ocean views at Barefoot on the Beach Cafe, just steps from the shore, before exploring further.

Between them, the two properties put you within easy reach of ocean baths, Mediterranean dining at Blanca, artisan spirits at Earp Distilling Co and the First Nations storytelling of the Muurrung Marai cultural tour.

Journey Home

As your coastal crawl ends in Newcastle, take your time with the final morning. The Pacific Motorway back to Sydney is an easy two and a half hours, but there is no rush to leave. Take a last dip at Merewether Ocean Baths, grab coffee and something excellent to eat at The Happy Wombat, and let the sea breeze do its thing one final time. The city will be waiting.
